Week Two and Three

Questions

Return to Week Two Assignments

1) Mandatory sentencing is part of the "three strikes laws" that have been passed by federal and state systems. What is a "three strikes law?"

Some states have passed laws that are popularly referred to as "three strike" laws. In brief these laws require judges to sentence offenders with multiple convictions of different types to specific sentences, some of which are life in prison. Some states apply the sanctions to any felony convictions and others limit the convictions to serious, violent convictions. This type of sentencing strategy has proven to be popular with some citizens. Some citizens have expressed strong concerns about the inequity of such sentencing strategies and concern about the costs involved with such strategies.

2) In simplistic terms, most research supports a belief that many criminals go free as the results of the bill of rights. (True or false)

False. The Seidman article provides some thoughts about this topic and points out that since most cases are plea bargained few criminals actually are not charged due to evidence being suppressed.
