Assignment
Learning Objectives:
  • Apply the learnings from the first two weeks and use them in resolving case studies.

  • Apply these learnings to case studies about possible actions by appointed or elected officials.
Review Topics:
  • Politics enters into the justice system in many ways, and in each of the case studies politics plays a role. Would the cases have been resolved in a "better" way without politics?
Discussion Topics:
  • Politics has a role, both positive and negative in the justice system. List and define a minimum of three positives and three negatives and describe the reasons for your view.
Writing Requirement:
  • Respond to one of case studies with a minimum of two pages (maximum of three pages) for the case study chosen.
Review Questions
  1. Mandatory sentencing is part of the "three strikes laws" that have been passed by federal and state systems.


  2. What is a "three strikes law"? In simplistic terms, most research supports a belief that many criminals go free as the results of the bill of rights. (true or false)
