1) List whom in general is elected to office and who is appointed to office in the criminal justice system.


In many, if not most jurisdictions, the sheriff and district attorney are elected to office. In some states, those that have a coroner, (Colorado) the coroner is also elected to office. In some states judges are elected to their position, and some states use an appointment process (in Colorado judges are first appointed by the governor and then must later stand for retention). In general officials such as directors of prisons or corrections are appointed, chief probation officers are appointed (in Colorado by the chief judge of the judicial district). It is critical that you understand the constitutional differences between the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government.

2) Prison population in the U.S. is growing and in fact the U.S. may have the highest number of individuals locked in prison per 100,000 than any other country in the world. (True or False)


False:
The U.S. probably has the highest percentage of its people in prison in the world, so the answer is true.

True: The prison population in the U.S. is around 600 per 100,000 individuals depending on which set of statistics you use. This is probably the highest rate of any known country in the world.
