Current Problems in Criminal Justice Administration

Course Description:

Examines criminal justice administration roles and objectives, current problems related to employee relations, retention, recruitment, professionalism, policy, discipline, continuing criminal activity, official misconduct, and corruption.

General:

It is expected that participants will read the assigned material. It is expected that work submitted for the course will be the work of the participants and that the work is intended for the specific course.

Grade Scale:

90+ = A
80 - 89 = B
70 - 79 = C
60 - 69 = D
59 (and below) = F

Student Evaluation:

  • Research paper = 20 points, maximum.
  • On-Line Discussions = 10 points, maximum
  • Writing Requirements for each segment = 45 points, maximum
  • Mid-Term - take home = 10 points, maximum
  • Final Exam - take home = 15 points, maximum.

Late Papers:

Individuals who turn in late papers will have the grade lowered by one point for every day that the paper is late.

Additional Work:

No additional work is accepted for this course. You will be graded on the scale and the projects described in this syllabus.

Requirements:

Paper:

The paper is due during the 15th week. The paper must be a minimum of 10 pages, (no more than 15 pages) not including the cover, table of contents, index, or bibliography, (double spaced, 12 or 14 point font). The paper must be typed and demonstrate that the individual has developed a strong knowledge of the specific topic. The paper must have cites appropriate for the paper. The author may use any approved system for cites. Topics must be approved by the instructor. A one page description is due by Friday of the third week.

Please keep in mind that research of a topic is envisioned as work that requires some depth (within the limits of 10 to 15 pages), thoughtfulness, clarity and diligence. Any format recognized by manual writes is acceptable. Remember that the final product should be devoid of typographical errors, incorrect spelling and garbled syntax.

The topics may cover areas covered in the course and are due the dates listed.

Essay Exam:

There will be two take home essay exams, during mid-term and finals week. The mid term will consist of three questions, with students answering two. For the final exam students will be given five questions and they must develop full answers to three of the questions. The response must be typed.

Writing Requirements:

Nine short papers are due covering topics discussed in class. They can not be more than two pages and no cites are required. The papers must be responsive to the question and use the following format:

  • Description of topic.
  • Position taken by author.
  • Justification
  • Summary

Papers will be graded based on:

  • Clarity
  • Justification
  • Rationale

Other:

Students desiring a reasonable accommodation under the American with Disabilities Act must contact me immediately to discuss their needs. Failure to notify the instructor in a timely manner of the need for a reasonable accommodation may hinder the college's ability to assist students in successfully completing the course.

If you need to miss a class due to a religious holiday observance, please notify me in writing during the first two weeks of the semester.

NC (No Credit) indicates that student has withdrawn or is not able to complete the course work. You must notify the instructor in writing if you are withdrawing from a class. The grade of NC may be given until the final date established by the college. You are responsible for completing the required forms and turning them into the registrar.
